Hair oils have gone from an occasional finishing touch to a daily essential, but do they actually work, and is oiling your hair good for it? Here is what hair oil does, who benefits most, and how to use it without ending up greasy.

What does hair oil actually do?

A good hair oil works on two levels. On the surface, it smooths the cuticle to add shine, tame frizz and reduce friction while styling. Used as a pre-wash treatment, some oils also soften and condition the hair so it feels stronger and looks healthier.

What oil cannot do is permanently repair or feed hair, because hair is not living tissue. So the goal is to protect, smooth and add slip, not to fix damage at its source.

Is hair oil right for your hair type?

  • Dry, frizzy or curly hair: yes, this is where oils shine. They seal in moisture and define texture.
  • Fine or oily hair: use sparingly. Choose a lightweight, fast-absorbing oil and keep it to the mid-lengths and ends.
  • Coloured or heat-styled hair: a light oil adds a protective layer and boosts shine.

How to use hair oil without the grease

  1. Start with less than you think, one or two drops for fine hair and a little more for thick or curly hair.
  2. Warm it between your palms, then apply to damp or dry mid-lengths and ends, never the roots.
  3. For a deeper treatment, apply to the lengths an hour before washing, then shampoo as normal.
