Quick answer: yes, an itchy scalp before your period is common, and hormones are the likely reason. In the days before a period, oestrogen falls and progesterone peaks, and those shifts are thought to make skin, including the scalp, more reactive and less able to hold on to moisture. Many people also notice oilier roots or flare-ups of existing skin conditions at this time. Gentle, soothing scalp care in the week before your period usually helps. If the itch is severe, comes with a rash or flaking that doesn't settle, or doesn't follow your cycle, see your GP or pharmacist.

If your scalp gets itchy, tight or irritated at the same point every month, you're not imagining it. Here's what's going on and what you can do about it.

Is it normal to have an itchy scalp before your period?

It's very common. In a large international survey of 17,009 women, almost half (48.8%) said they experienced an itchy scalp, and scalp problems that came and went were reported more often in the premenstrual and menstrual phases than around ovulation. Skin specialists have also long recognised that some skin conditions tend to flare around a period.

Real experience: "It's like clockwork"

"I have adenomyosis and very strong hormonal shifts. About a week before my period, my scalp starts itching along my parting and at the crown, with flakes, and I don't get it at any other time of the month. It's worse when I tie my hair up that week. I use the Rebalancing scalp scrub, Scalp Exfoliating Cream, to clear the flakes and the Lenitive Scalp Comfort Cream to soothe it."

Why does my scalp itch before my period?

Your scalp is skin, so it responds to the same hormonal changes as the rest of your body.

  • Falling oestrogen. Oestrogen is linked to thicker, better-hydrated skin with a stronger barrier. As it drops before your period, skin can become drier and more easily irritated.
  • Peaking progesterone. A dermatology review notes that flares of several skin conditions tend to occur when progesterone is at its highest, in the second half of the cycle.
  • A more reactive barrier. These hormonal shifts are thought to temporarily reduce the skin's barrier and immune defences, so products, hot water, heat styling or stress that you'd normally tolerate can trigger itching.
  • Oilier roots. Many people notice their scalp gets greasier before a period. Extra oil and build-up can leave the scalp feeling itchy and uncomfortable, especially if you're washing less often.
  • Existing skin conditions. Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and irritant dermatitis are among those reported to worsen around periods. If you have one of these, you may notice a pattern.

How to soothe an itchy scalp before your period

  1. Switch to a soothing shampoo for the week before your period. Dermo-Calming Shampoo is an extremely gentle shampoo for an itchy, red or irritated scalp, with organic prickly pear, aloe and mallow.
  2. Clear flakes gently. If you get flakes, a scalp scrub such as Scalp Exfoliating Cream lifts them away before you shampoo. Use it gently, and skip it if the skin is broken or very sore. Our guide to scalp scrubs explains how.
  3. Use a leave-on scalp treatment on uncomfortable days. Scalp Comfort Cream brings an instant feeling of freshness and comfort, with no need to rinse.
  4. Keep everyday care gentle. If your scalp tends to react easily all month, the Sensitive range is mild enough for daily use.
  5. Wash in lukewarm water. Hot water strips the scalp and makes itching worse.
  6. Don't skip washes if you're oily. Build-up makes itching worse, so keep washing gently as often as you need to.
  7. Massage, don't scratch. Use your fingertips, not your nails, so you don't damage the skin.
  8. Wear your hair loose, or tie it loosely. Tight ponytails and buns pull on the scalp and can trap heat and oil along the parting and crown, which can make a reactive scalp itchier. That week, try a soft, loose style or a silk scrunchie, and move your parting if it feels sore.
  9. Go easy on heat and new products. This isn't the week to try a new styling product or blast your scalp with a hot hairdryer.
  10. Track it. Note when the itch starts and stops. If it follows your cycle, you can start your soothing routine a few days ahead.

Every product mentioned here is COSMOS Natural certified and dermatologically tested on sensitive skin. They do contain fragrance, so if you know you react to a specific fragrance ingredient or essential oil, check the full ingredient list on the product page and patch test first. What if my scalp is flaky or oily too?

Flaky: itching with visible white or yellow flakes may be dandruff, which can also flare with hormonal changes. Read our guide to dandruff causes and treatment, or try Purifying Shampoo.

Oily: if greasy roots are the main problem, our guide to the best shampoo for oily hair has more tips.

When to see a GP or pharmacist

An itchy scalp before your period is usually a nuisance rather than something to worry about. But do get advice if:

  • the itching is severe, painful or keeps you awake
  • your scalp is red, scaly, weeping, bleeding or has a rash that spreads
  • you notice patches of hair loss
  • it doesn't settle after your period, or doesn't seem linked to your cycle at all
  • you have other symptoms around your period that affect your daily life

Rarely, some people have a hormone-related skin reaction that needs medical assessment, and conditions like eczema, psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis respond best to proper diagnosis and treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Can hormones cause an itchy scalp?
Yes. Shifts in oestrogen and progesterone across your cycle are thought to affect skin hydration and barrier function, which can make the scalp more reactive and itchy before a period.

Why does my scalp itch more during my period?
Hormone levels are at their lowest around the start of your period, and skin can be drier and more sensitive. Scalp problems that come and go are reported more often in the premenstrual and menstrual phases.

Why is my hair greasy before my period?
Many people notice oilier skin and roots before a period, which is linked to hormonal changes in the second half of the cycle. Keep washing gently and regularly to stop build-up.

What's the best shampoo for an itchy scalp before my period?
A gentle, soothing shampoo that's dermatologically tested on sensitive skin. Dermo-Calming Shampoo is made for an itchy, irritated scalp. For more options, see our guide to the best shampoo for an itchy scalp.
