Hair Loss Awareness Month: Hairstyles to Hide Hair Loss

Hair loss can be a distressing experience, but it doesn’t have to overshadow your style. With the right haircut and styling techniques, you can create the illusion of fuller, thicker hair. We’ve consulted top hairstylists for their expert advice on hairstyles that can help disguise hair loss.

Understanding Hair Loss

Hair loss can occur for various reasons, including stress, hormonal changes, medical conditions, or genetics. Whatever the cause, it can be emotionally challenging. While we believe in embracing your natural beauty, we also understand the desire to manage the appearance of hair loss.

Understanding Your Hair

The first step is understanding the type of hair loss you’re experiencing. Is it thinning at the crown, a receding hairline, or general thinning? This will help us decide on the most flattering hairstyle. Speak to your hairdresser if you are unsure of your exact hair loss issue.

hair styles for hair loss: side bangs

1. Side-Swept Bangs

A classic choice for disguising a receding hairline. Ask your stylist to create bangs that blend seamlessly into the rest of your hair. This style is particularly helpful if you have a single side that is receding more than the other (a common hair loss concern for women). Celeb stylist  Jerome Lordet says, If you don’t have bangs, leave a small section out from the left and right side and pull those sections back and secure them behind ears. This will give the illusion of bangs/a fringe, that hides any thinning.

2. Headbands and Accessories

Headbands are a versatile accessory that can draw attention away from thinning areas.

Strategic placement: Position the headband to cover areas where your hair is thinner. Experiment with different heights to find the most flattering look.

Create volume: For a fuller appearance, tease the hair at the crown before putting on the headband. This will give your hair a boost and help to conceal thinning areas.

3. Try a new cut

A blunt bob creates a strong, defined look that can make hair appear thicker. Add layers for added dimension and movement. Discuss your cut with a stylist for best results; they can advise on face shape and suitability. If you’re scared of the big chop, experiment with layers for the appearance of thicker hair.

Note: Oval face shapes are the most universal for bobs.

4. Top Knot

Ideal for those with hair loss at the crown, a top knot can create a flattering and stylish look. Experiment with different heights and textures to find what suits you best.

This style will is not best suited for those with thinning around the hairline as it will only accentuate the thinning. Although adding a head band can hide the thinning and the style can still be enjoyed.

5. When you really can’t be bothered with a hairstyle

Some days, hairstyles and tools aren’t on our agenda. Incorporate hats into your everyday style to cover any insecurities of thin hair. Hats are also a great way to hide messy hair when we just fancy an off day.

Added bonus, hats are very in style for 2024!

4. Side Part

If you’re noticing thinning at the crown, celebrity hairstylist Matt Collins recommends ditching the centre parting. Instead, opt for a deep side part. Start by generously spraying your hair with a volumising product (See our Volumizing Range). For maximum volume, blow-dry your hair upside down. Once dry, gently flip your hair to the side, creating a deep part. This clever technique will help to disguise thinning areas and give your hair a fuller appearance.

7. Embrace your curls

If you have curly hair, use it! Curls can be a great way to camouflage hair loss. They add volume and texture while drawing attention away from thinning areas. Emphasise your curls with our Elasti-Curl Range; suitable for all curl types.

Make sure to part your hair appropriately, in the direction that your curls will hide any thinning you have.

8. Face-Framing Layers

The main area that woman face hair thinning is around their hair line and temples; soft layers around your face can help to balance out thinner areas and create a flattering frame for your face.

You can also try adding volume and movement; soft wavy textures can create the illusion of volume. We recommend our Volumizing Range; in particular our Root Lotion for an extra boost.

9. Backcombed Ponytail

A high ponytail with backcombed roots can add volume and disguise hair loss at the crown. Remember not to back comb too deeply/roughly as this can be a nightmare to comb out and may even lead to more hair loss due to pulling of the hair. It is also a good idea to find hair ties that work with your hair. We recommend satin finish or non pull ties.
